Papers, 1812-1950 (bulk 1854-1915).

The correspondence, 1854-1915, of Holmes Conrad, of Winchester, Va., and Washington, D.C., who became Assistant Attorney General of the United States, accounts for about half of the collection. It includes letters, 1854-1874, from his parents, Elizabeth Whiting (Powell) Conrad and Robert Young Conrad, of Winchester, while Holmes attended the Virginia Military Institute and the University of Virginia and served in the Army of the Confederate States of America. Other correspondence is primarily social and ceremonial. Correspondence, 1861-1870, of Robert Young Conrad contains letters to his wife and children, including a few written while attending the Secession Convention in Richmond in 1861 and while he was imprisoned at Fort McHenry during the Civil War. The correspondence, 1868- 1920, of Holmes Conrad's wife, Georgia Bryan (Forman) Conrad, includes both business and personal letters, as well as many letters of condolence concerning her husband's death. A few papers of other members of the Conrad and Forman families are included in the collection.
